About Us

Welcome to Green School Bali

Green School Bali is a Pre-K to Grade 12 school in the jungle of Bali. Since 2008, young people here have learned beside the Ayung River, with the living world all around them.

This is regenerative education. Through BiRD, our Biomimicry for Regenerative Design approach, your child studies how living systems work and designs with them. From Pre-K to Grade 12, their work already reaches the community around them, alongside classmates from around the world and our Balinese neighbours. They grow up knowing they are part of the living world, and they take that with them wherever they go next. Nearly 500 students, 40 nationalities, 290 graduates since 2013.

Vision

A community of learners making our world sustainable

Mission

At Green School, we educate for sustainability, through community-integrated, entrepreneurial learning, in a wall-less, natural environment. Our holistic, student-guided approach inspires and empowers us to be changemakers.

Through learning, practice, and community, we champion a new model of education that cultivates regenerative mindsets and solutions, preparing our students to lead positive change for a thriving and interconnected world.

I-RESPECT: who we are

These eight values are what make us Green School. They guide how we learn and how we shape our community as it shapes us.

Who leads the learning
Meet the people who lead learning at Green School Bali, from Early Years to High School.

Our History

Green School began in 2006 with John and Cynthia Hardy, two Bali-based creative entrepreneurs. After years of homeschooling, they wanted their daughters to go to a school they believed in, one they would want to attend themselves, without leaving Bali. So they decided to build it.

“Green School is a model we built for the world.”
John & Cynthia Hardy, Green School Co-founders

In November 2006, the 22-metre bamboo bridge across the Ayung River was finished: the moment the idea became something you could walk across.

Green School opened in September 2008 with 90 students, on a campus grown out of jungle and rice fields. Today nearly 500 young people learn here, from Pre-K to Grade 12, and Green Schools have opened in New Zealand and South Africa.

Governance at Green School

Green School operates in Bali under Yayasan Kul Kul, a non-profit foundation registered in Indonesia. A Constitution and Bylaws guide each governing body in line with Indonesian regulations.

Our Governance Structure and Decision-Making Policy Manual sets out the roles and responsibilities of each body and how they work together.

Yayasan Kul Kul (YKK) Legal Bodies

Led by Dr. Ni Putu Tirka Widanti, President, YKK

BOARD OF LEARNERS (Dewan Sekolah/School Board)

Representatives of students, teachers, parents, and our Balinese families are elected annually by their stakeholder groups annually. The Board of Learners meets regularly through the year, supporting and monitoring the implementation of the School plan and contributing ideas for Mission-aligned School improvement.

Green School Executive Committee (GSEC)

Members of the school leadership team who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school, in line with priorities and budgets.

Dr. Benjamin Freud, Chair, Head of Campus

The Green School Parents Association (GSPA) and the Green School Students Association (GSSA) also help shape school life, alongside committees and task forces approved by GSEC.
